Hemochromatosis

Published by User ImageJ Scott under health etc.

I have an interest in the gentic disorders. It is a field that there is always something new happening. I had a friend in high school who had cystic fibrosis, a gentic disorder and it my interest started with her. I was thinking of a story about siblings that were seperated because their parents gave them up and I had to think of reason why a court would open closed adoption records for one sibling to find another. A genetic disorder but which one I needed something that was genetic but would not be diagnosed until later in life. I did some searching and found Hemacromotosis a blood disorder where a person has to much iron in the blood. If interested you can read the story, Spaghetti by the Neon Light.

Iron is something that body can not expel and it builds up espcially in the liver. This is a genetic disorder for people of Irish or British decent. And some signs that you should get tested if a parent or sibling has joint disease, severe fatigue, heart disease, elevated liver enzymes, impotence and diabetes. In the story that mother has diabetes. Here are some symptoms that you may have hemochromotosis liver cirrhosis, a feeling that you are not right and something is wrong ( malaise), insulin resistance, erectile dysfunction, conjestive heart failure, arthritis of the hands, shoulder and knees.

Once diagnosed the doctor can do oragn therapy, you can refrain from alcohol and vitamin c, red meat and shell fish. Once you are stable they will take blood to rid the excess iron.

Recharge Yourself

Published by User ImageJ Scott under health etc.

There is nothing like Caribbean cruises to refocus your life and recharge your mental state. I think any vaction can do this because you can enjoy your surroundings. It has to be real vacation where you go somewhere but not visit family. Family can be stressful sometimes.

Saving money and spending money on a good vacation to the Carribbean or somewhere else really does wonders for your mental state. A vacation is worth a splurge.

Have Two Email Address Sign Up for Newsletters

Published by User ImageJ Scott under saving money

I mentioned a week or so ago about signing up for newsletters from certain companies can save you money. Creating an email account for this purpose such as yahoo or Gmail can keep your regular inbox at reasonable levels  but you still find out the deals.

I recieve the tracfone newsletter. My cell phone is tracfone and I have claimed free minutes with coupon codes given to their subscribers. I cashed in for a 60 minute bonus and a thirty minute bonus. I don’t know about other cell carriers but Virgin mobile offers Sugar Momma where you can earn free airtime by watching ads and doing text surveys.

I also recieve the Vista Print newsletter. I signed up for this when I did a post for them awhile back. They were running a 2 day sale and I jumped on it. I got 250 business cards free and I had to pay shipping of $5.65 since I opted for media mail.

The last one I get is from Big Fish Games. A few weeks ago I cashed in big time because I could by a 20 dollar game for one dollar.

I am always on the look out for newsletters of companies that interest me and you should to, you never know when you can get the deal of the century just by giving them your email address. Check your cell providers or any store that you shop at they may have something special for customers.

Charley Horses

Published by User ImageJ Scott under my health

The other night I woke from a dead sleep to a hellacious leg cramp. My calf tightened up and even stretching the muscle didn’t help, until the actual contraction ended then I could get up and stretch it out.  That maybe one of the only things that can pull from sleep other than Sunshine crying or something similar.  I went back to sleep but the muscle was still tender throughout the day.

I don’t get them all the time, I always thought getting a leg cramp was because of lack of calcium or milk. That night I knew it couldn’t be true because I had cereal earlier that day. Did you know that leg cramps can be caused by not drinking enough water? I think this could be the culprit because I get tired of water even if I add a lot of ice and drink it, I get sick of it. My main fluid is coffee and that might be good for the brain but not anything else.  Some other causes of leg cramps could be electrolyte imbalance, excess weight and new exercise, alcohol use, pregnancy and even prolonged sitting.

For me when a charley horse hits, when I can stand on it, I stretch it until the pain subsides. Just another nuisance.

Ways to Make Quick Money

Published by User ImageJ Scott under saving money

I am always looking for ways to increase my money.  Especially right around Cristmas or birthdays or even before I go  away for the weekend. I found some ideas to increase your dollar bills in a short amount of time.

1. Start a home business, like dog walking, dog sitting, lawnmowing, carwashing that kind of thing.

2.  Get a part  time  job especially as someone who earns tips. This is really helpful if you need money sooner than later

3. Make something. Do you know how to sew or woodwork or even make jewlery make some and try selling your handmade goods on etsy, ebay, or even or own yard sale

4.  Sell stuff on  craigslist

5. Online  jobs, there is thing called Amazon  “turking”  I am not sure on how this works but you can google it. I think I will look into it and see what is all about. Though with most online jobs you won’t see riches rigth away

6.Yard sale

7. Recycling scrap metal metal like aluminum cans, copper and steel for the most amount of money you better have tons and a pick up

8. Plasma donation. Lucky for me State College has a donation center and I used to donate all the way until I became pregnant.  I made an extra $200 each month not too bad.

9.Sperm donation. Being a woman I don’t know too much about this but I am sure for some people this is a real life saver.

Have a nice day!

Cheaper Ways for Auto Repair

Published by User ImageJ Scott under saving money

If something goes wrong with your car and take it to the shop it can cost you an boat load of cash. Unfortunately, for many people not having a car means the possibility of no money coming in because you can’t get to work. Let’s assume that your power steering rack goes (and this is important for handling your car and driving in general) you could take it to the shop where the person could buy the most expensive part and charge labor on top of it. Or you could visit powersteeringpros.com for a steering box and then find a mechanic to put it in and pay for labor.

In my opinion shopping for parts and taking them to the mechanic can save you money maybe a couple of bucks or maybe a lot of money. Do your homework. For instance the above site offers a full warranty and free shipping, that is saving money now and further down the road.

Easy Ways to Boost Your Memory

Published by User ImageJ Scott under health news

Senility and Alzeihmer’s do happen with old age for some people. There may not be a preventive technique so you will never get these disorders but you can try everything you can to boost your memory. What would it hurt as these memory boosters are simple and good for you as well.

~Stock up on blueberries. I don’t care for these raw but I love them in muffins. I don’t think cooking them will take away their helpful properties, it gives you another reason to eat that blueberry muffin!

~Strawberries. Yummy! Especially this time of year when the local farmers are picking the summer’s best. I like the ones the are so ripe they will probably spoil in the next day.

~Spinach. OKay most people don’t like spinach. Raw spinach has a flavor similar to romain lettuce. For cooked spinach try  a dish like quiche you can barely taste the spinach.

~Turmeric. This is a spice and it is a staple in Indian coking not only does it help your brain but there seems to be anti cancer and anti inflammatory properties.

~Fish and fish oil. I guess we already knew fish was good for us. Personally, I love salmon.

~Eggs. Mix this with the spinach and you are halfway to a delicious quiche

~Acetyl-L-carnitine this is a supplement that taken in regular doses (500 mg-1000mg) can help with cognitive function. I am not a big supplement person but if you can’t enough supplements, you can add this to your collection

~Phosphatidyl Serine- another suplement you are supposed to take  with salmon or sardines. If I can’t pronounce it I don’t want to take it.

~Ginkgo Biloba-  you can find this in a lot of green teas

~Exercise- another reason to exercise.

Have a memorable day!

Dolphin Therapy

Published by User ImageJ Scott under health news

Earlier tonight I watched Nature  on PBS and they were talking about humans and the animal kingdom. One segment was very interesting and it was about dolphins mixed with thearpy to help children with special needs. One boy who came from England comes to Florida every year for two weeks to recieve dolphin therapy with a speech therapist and now the boy can communicate some when before he couldn’t.

Animals have always been proven to be useful in making someone feel better but can dolphins do much more than bring happiness to someone? For parents who fork out the dough say it is true. Scientists are now trying to prove with hard evidence that DAT (dolphin assisted therapy) really works or are there other factors for children learning to commnicate or have functionality with someone else. A 40 minute session of DAT is thousands of dollars plus travel and expenses if the person doesn’t live close to one of these marine parks.

What do you think about Dolphin Therapy? Does it work? Or does swimming with dolphins make the patient relax and able to focus more on learning a new task?
